AI-enabled operational leverage could make permanent ownership much more attractive, but it may also make portfolio companies look increasingly similar. If every owner applies the same pricing, procurement and workflow models, operational alpha will eventually become operational convention. The enduring edge may belong to firms that use AI to deepen judgment rather than standardize every company around the same playbook.

AI may change the economics of ownership more than the economics of selection. If operational knowledge can be encoded and redeployed across portfolio companies, the traditional separation between investor and operator becomes less stable. Permanent capital then matters because it allows those capabilities to compound beyond a conventional exit cycle. The risk is that algorithmic standardization produces superficially efficient but strategically identical businesses. Durable advantage will probably come from combining shared intelligence with local operating judgment, rather than attempting to automate judgment away.
