The financing gap is often described as insufficient investor appetite, but it is also a translation problem. Scientific teams describe technical possibility; conventional investors look for comparable milestones, market evidence and bounded downside. Specialist capital creates value by translating one system of evidence into the other. This also suggests that “more VC” is not always the solution. Different phases of technical risk, industrialization and commercial adoption may require different capital instruments, with venture equity reserved for the risks it is genuinely equipped to absorb.
